Netiquette in the Bglug public list
Composition of a message to be sent to the public list
- Registration for the mailing list is open to everyone, but only subscribers can send messages. For this reason it is absolutely necessary to send emails through the same address with which the registration was made.
- Messages must be synthetic, clear, built in a consequential and complete way of all the information necessary to make the content understandable to the recipients.
- Email’s object must be appropriate and summarize the contents of your message in a nutshell.
- Use, if possible, plain text format. Emails in HTML format are tolerated, but not those in RTF or any other format.
- Writing entire words or capital phrases is equivalent to scream: this is not tolerable in a public and civil situation such as that of the list.
- If you want to add a signature, it must be short (maximum five lines) and at the bottom of the message. The information reported in signature should directly concern the sender and not sponsor products / associations / companies that have no to do with non-profit reality.
- If you have a problem and you want to receive support from the community, you need to start a new discussion. To do this, simply indicate the address of the mailing list as a recipient ([bglug@lists.linux.it](mailto: bglug@lists.linux.it)), summarize in the subject of the message its problem and expose it clearly and concise in the text of the email. Do not enter your problem in an existing discussion.
- If you decide to send an email for the first time, it is advisable to take example some previous discussion (the discussions archive is available at the address https://lists.linux.it/pipermail/bglug). It would also be appropriate to present yourself by providing some information on yourself and how it has become aware of the mailing list.
- Do not attach files, images, code extracts or archives to your message. There are various services that allow you to share files and code without attaching them to the message. After uploading the file on your favorite web application, insert the link containing the position of your file into the text. Any message containing attachments is automatically discarded by our messages reception filter.
- In a discussion, the insertion of advertising messages or communications that have not been explicitly requested is not tolerated. The spam and the collection of data is absolutely forbidden to that end.
- Do not start and do not take part in a Flame War, often fruit of misunderstandings. If it was incurred in this unpleasant situation, it should be resolved in a private exchange of messages among the interested parties.
- To take part in a discussion you need “quote” the parts of the messages you want to reply. In this way it will be easier for others to follow the flow of answers.
- It is strictly forbidden to do top-posting. It is a good practice to make sure of “answer in line” below the part to which you want to replicate.
- Avoid breaking the thread(sequence of responses related to an initial message) completely changing the subject in a pre-existing discussion. This can create confusion making it impossible to follow the logical thread of the speech.
How to interact within the public list
- The ideas and values of each individual must be respected. No lack of respect will be tolerated and the measures taken by the moderators will be severe and immediate.
- Don’t be too strict with grammatical errors: a message that is understandable to recipients is always to be considered valid.
- Do not publish parts of private emails without the consent of the original sender.
- Stay on the purpose of the list (Linux and the free/opensource software) and avoid, as far as possible, to create off-topic. The off-topic are tolerated only if the label “[OT]” is before the object of the email.
